Last Friday after my hair appointment Rob and I went out to dinner at "The Tequila" in Winton. It is my favorite Mexican restaurant. When our waitress first stopped at our table she recognized me. It took her a minute, but she realized that she had been in one of my library instruction sessions at UC Merced recently. She told us that she is a single mom with a 5 year old daughter, totally self-supported by working at the restaurant. She has one more semester before she graduates and then she hopes to go to grad school at Stan State in Social Work.
She was so darling, and so deserving that after I paid the bill (and left a generous tip)I found a minute to hand her $10 with a little note to cheer her on. This may have been my favorite act of love yet. :)
